you never want to look like you've spent too much time getting dressed.
i like mixing expensive with inexpensive. and i like easy things that don't normally go together...
get to know your proportions. one of the secrets to figuring out your proportions is to really listen when people pay you a compliment, especially if you're getting the same compliments over and over. if someone says something looks good on you, look in the mirror and take note. there's a reason.
it's massively important for me to feel comfortable in what i'm wearing. it just makes me feel better, then my face looks better. when you show the world your best face and your best self, you quite often get that back.
developing your very best personal style...involves a lot of trial and error.
i want to wear whatever looks good on me, no matter where it comes from.
don't shy away from colour, but be sure to learn what works best with your skin tone.
fashion is what you're offered four times a year. style is what you pick out of that fashion...it's what you make of it once you've learned what to accept and ignore based on what best suits you.

lauren and i, we could've written these tips together. i'm with her on every point.
like her, it's incredibly important for me to be comfortable in what i'm wearing no matter the occasion. when i'm comfortable i'm more confident. and mixing pieces that wouldn't normally go together--the best fun! especially when it turns out better than you might have thought and when people notice. nothing like a kind style-related compliment to cement your personal style. colour is always fun to play with and mix up but let it not be forgotten the power behind wearing black head-to-toe. very chic. very stylish. always in fashion. no matter your proportions.

do you have personal style? how would you label your personal style? do you dabble in different fashion genres?

I know! I loved this feature too. I am also planning to blog it but haven't had a moment! Very wise words of advice. This is random, but Lauren Hutton was on the cover of the very first JCrew magazine I ever received, 1997 I think?
ReplyDeleteAlas, my personal sense of style and fashion never reaches my clothing. If there's an ultimate, boring conservative out there, I'm it--same haircut since I had hair to cut (though I nearly as little now as I started out with 33 years ago), except for a buzz for a few years, tshirt and jeans my comfort preference, and I always lean toward that--comfort--before anything else of my appearance. Except good socks and ties. I guess that's where any personal clothier's fashion manifests itself. Except the cool socks all have holes, and my tie collection is waning for my children's assaults of pen, spaghetti sauce, and sticker-goo.
ReplyDeletewow, good memory kim! i'm not surprised that she was though because now that i think about it i remember seeing her in several j.crew catalogs, especially holiday issues. that big smile and space between her front teeth is hard to forget.
ReplyDeletejoe, you are definitely a man of style. sure, you have your comfortable-go-to-wear (classic dhs band tees) but in my head, you're definitely a tie and sock man. sometimes you'll sport a rad sweater vest and it works. your glasses add to your personal style. it's good stuff. one of these days i can imagine seeing you in a tan/brown corduroy blazer with elbow patches. :-)
ReplyDeleteHmm. I don't know about the elbow patches, but I've got a green corduroy suit I picked up in Italy that I'd like eventually to get re-fitted.
